Croatia is no longer a hidden gem when it comes to breathtaking Mediterranean getaways. Beyond the mainland, a paradise of secluded coves, turquoise waters, and stunning pebble, rock, and sandy beaches awaits. In this guide, I’ll take you to 20 of my personal favorite island beaches in Croatia – some are famous, others are truly off the beaten path:
Nestled beneath the cliffs of Stara Baška, this hidden cove features a gentle pebble beach and crystal-clear waters, ideal for snorkeling. A small kiosk offers drinks and loungers without disturbing the bay’s untamed charm.
Tucked between pine forests and rocky terrain south of Mali Lošinj, this natural beach is accessed via a quiet path. It’s rarely crowded and completely undeveloped – bring everything you need.
A wide, shallow sandy beach – a rare find in Croatia. Located on car-free Susak, Bok Plaza is especially great for families.
A surreal seascape near Metajna, where giant, smooth boulders rest in shallow turquoise water. Reach it by coastal path or boat.
At the edge of the car-free town of Silba lies this sandy beach with clear, shallow water and pine trees providing shade. Local cafés and taverns are just a short stroll away.
A long, bright pebble beach on the island’s west coast, with open views of the sea. Its name translates to “big beach” – and rightly so.
Dramatic cliffs and caves surround this hidden cove with deep turquoise water. Perfect for cliff jumping, snorkeling, or kayaking.
A secluded golden-sand bay in the island’s southern part, framed by pine trees and shallow, clear water.
This Caribbean-like sandy beach is found on one of Dalmatia’s quietest islands. Soft sand and shallow waters make it a dreamy escape.
Just a short walk from the harbor, this natural beach offers light pebbles, clear shallow water, and shelter from the wind.
Murvica, just west of the famous Zlatni Rat, is quieter and surrounded by vineyards and cliffs. Continue walking and you’ll reach Zlatni Rat’s ever-shifting golden tip.
A remote, pebbly cove on Hvar’s north coast with dazzlingly clear water. No kiosks or sunbeds – just nature.
West of Sveta Nedjelja, this tiny bay lies beneath a steep cliff. You’ll need to hike or boat in – but the reward is worth it.
A gently curved bay on the Pakleni Islands near Hvar, with calm waters, smooth pebbles, and shady pine trees.
A quiet, rocky cove on the car-free island of Šćedro, just south of Hvar. Expect crystal-clear waters and untouched surroundings.
Named the “Silver Beach” for its shimmering white rocks, this elegant spot is easy to reach and offers smooth sunbathing rocks and pebbly sea access.
A postcard-perfect bay near Račišće in the island’s north. Reachable only on foot or by boat, it features white pebbles and incredible water clarity.
Set in a lush green bay, this large pebble beach combines natural beauty with taverns and loungers. A favorite among locals.
Located on the western edge of Lastovo town, this small, rocky beach offers deep, clear waters and phenomenal sunsets.
A spacious sandy beach – rare in Croatia – surrounded by pine forests in Mljet’s southeast. Nearby accommodations and eateries make it family-friendly.
To help you plan your perfect beach day, I’ve marked all 20 locations on an interactive Google Map (look for the red stars). Whether you’re traveling by car, ferry, or catamaran, it’s now easier than ever to choose your ideal island destination.
Since most Croatian beaches are pebbly or rocky, a few smart extras can make your beach day even better:
Our conclusion: Croatia’s island beaches are a dreamscape. From glamorous postcard icons like Zlatni Rat to wild, hidden coves like Brbinjšćica, each beach offers a unique character and atmosphere. This might just be the year you plan your holiday not around a town – but around your new favorite beach.
