Hermanus is considered one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. But this charming coastal town offers far more than marine giants: dramatic cliff walks, beautiful beaches, creative cafés, and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere make Hermanus a truly memorable stop. While many travelers spend 3–4 days here, the highlights can easily be experienced over a single weekend:

Day 1 – Whale Vibes, Cliff Path & Waterfront

8:30 AM – Breakfast at CanD’s Kitchen

Start your day with breakfast at CanD’s Kitchen. This charming café is known for fresh, locally sourced ingredients, excellent coffee, and a relaxed atmosphere – the perfect way to ease into your Hermanus adventure before heading out for whale watching and coastal walks.

9:30 AM – Hermanus Cliff Path Hiking Trail

The Cliff Path stretches for around 7.5 miles (12 km) along the coastline and offers breathtaking views over Walker Bay. Mornings are usually quieter, the light is soft on the cliffs, and the chances of spotting whales in the bay are especially high.

Pro tip: Bring binoculars and keep an eye out for the distinctive backs and flukes of Southern Right Whales. Photography lovers will find plenty of stunning viewpoints along the way.

12:30 PM – Lunch at the Hermanus Waterfront

The Hermanus Waterfront is the lively heart of town, with restaurants, shops, and a picturesque harbor perfect for a relaxed stroll. For lunch, we recommend Bientang’s Cave Restaurant & Wine Bar – enjoy fresh seafood with views of the water and fishing boats, an ideal reward after your cliff walk.

2:00 PM – Whale Museum

Just a few minutes from the waterfront, the Whale Museum offers fascinating insights into the whales of the region, their migration routes, and conservation efforts to protect the endangered Southern Right Whales. A must-visit for first-time visitors who want to better understand these incredible animals.

4:00 PM – Hermanus Tidal Pool & Rotary Way Lookout

Spend the late afternoon at the Hermanus Tidal Pool, located right by the ocean and perfect for a refreshing dip or a relaxed walk. Afterwards, head up to the Rotary Way Lookout for sweeping views of the coastline, the sea, and – with a bit of luck – whales cruising through the bay.

7:00 PM – Dinner at The Rock Restaurant

To end the day on a relaxed note, enjoy dinner at The Rock Restaurant. Known for its local cuisine and ocean views, it’s a great place to unwind and watch the waves roll in.

Day 2 – Nature, Beaches & Panoramic Views

8:00 AM – Whale Watching Tour

Depending on the season (June–November), choose one of the following experiences:

  1. Boat-Based Whale Watching (2 hours):
    • Head out to sea with experienced guides and learn more about the whales up close. With a bit of luck, you’ll spot Southern Right Whales, Bryde’s whales, humpbacks, as well as dolphins and seals. Tour details
  2. Whale Watching Walking Tour (2–3 hours):
    • A land-based alternative that takes you to 5–7 of the best lookout points around Hermanus. Led by a knowledgeable guide in a small group and often combined with a visit to the Whale Museum. Tour details

1:00 PM – Lunch & Coffee Break

After a morning on the water or along the coast, it’s time to refuel. Back at the harbor area, several cafés along the waterfront invite you to slow down and relax. A local favorite is The Handmill Coffee Shop on Harbour Road – loved for its excellent coffee, fresh pastries, and easygoing lunch options.

3:00 PMGrotto Beach & Sunset Time

Grotto Beach is perfect for a leisurely walk, a picnic, or simply relaxing by the sea. In the late afternoon, the beach becomes especially atmospheric, with soft light and wide-open views.

Choose between watching the sunset from Grotto Beach or taking a final stroll along the Cliff Path – both offer spectacular scenery and coastal panoramas.

7:00 PM – Dinner at The Wine Glass Hermanus

Wrap up your 48 hours in Hermanus with dinner at The Wine Glass Hermanus. This stylish restaurant is known for its excellent selection of South African wines and seasonal dishes – the perfect place to reflect on your weekend in a relaxed, elegant setting.

Where to Stay in Hermanus – Comfortable, Central & Stylish

Whale Coast All Suite Hotel – elegant & comfortable: Centrally located in Hermanus, this hotel offers modern apartments with ocean views, spacious rooms, and easy access to the waterfront, beaches, and hiking trails. An ideal home base for your 48-hour stay.

All Spots at a Glance – Google My Map

Our conclusion: Hermanus is the perfect weekend destination. Whales, dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, and excellent food can all be combined seamlessly in just 48 hours. If you have more time, consider adding day trips along the coast or into the nearby wine regions.
