Money-Saving Tips for South Africa
South Africa is generally a very affordable destination, but a few smart tips can help you stretch your budget without compromising comfort or experiences:
Book Accommodations Wisely
Booking early pays off, especially in popular destinations like Cape Town, Plettenberg Bay, or national parks. This ensures good-quality stays at fair prices.
We were pleasantly surprised that our average cost was only €47 (USD 56) per night, while still staying in comfortable hotels, guesthouses, and Airbnbs.
Self-Drive Over Guided Tours
Self-drive is often the best way to explore South Africa: Addo Elephant, De Hoop, or Robberg Nature Reserve are perfect for independent exploration.
Book guided tours only for unique experiences, like sea lion snorkeling in Plettenberg Bay or special safari expeditions. This keeps costs down and maintains flexibility.
Eating & Shopping Smart
A mix of restaurants and self-catering can save €10–20 (USD 12-24) per person per day.
Supermarkets like Checkers are gold: fresh food, ready-to-eat meals, and snacks for the road. Perfect for picnics on a road trip or in national parks.
Don’t miss biltong & droëwors – dried meat in all kinds of flavors. A must-try snack for hikes, picnics, or long drives (but don’t bring it home – importing meat products is prohibited).
National Parks & Wild Card
If you plan to visit multiple SAN Parks, a Wild Card might be worthwhile – it grants unlimited access for one year. More info here. Note: Currently €383 for two people (€191.50 p.p. / USD 228 p.p.), so it’s only worth it if you hit several parks. For our route, individual tickets worked perfectly.
Fuel & Navigation
Fill up before long stretches, especially before nature reserves with no gas stations.
Download offline maps or GPS apps – this saves time and stress on gravel roads and in remote areas. Always take a park map when entering a national park or nature reserve – it helps orientation on site.
Left-hand traffic: extra attention is needed in the first days, especially in cities, intersections, and roundabouts.
Extra Tips to Save Money & Time
Local SIM / eSIM: saves roaming costs and keeps navigation and info at your fingertips.
Local markets & street stalls: often cheaper and more authentic than tourist shops – sometimes requires a bit of haggling.
Our conclusion: With some planning, a 21-day South Africa road trip can be comfortable and affordable. We spent roughly €50–60 (USD 60-70) per day per person, including hotels, rental car, meals, and park entries. The best part? Even on a moderate budget, you enjoy great accommodations, excellent food, and unforgettable experiences – from the Garden Route and coastal hikes to wildlife safaris in Pilanesberg and Addo Elephant National Park.
