Let’s Hit the Road: Leaving Yellowstone
After exploring Yellowstone’s surreal landscapes – bubbling geysers, roaming bison in Hayden Valley, and thunderous waterfalls – it’s time to head south. But don’t worry, the adventure is far from over. Another stunning national park awaits.
Stop 1: Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Just south of Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park welcomes you with its dramatic, jagged peaks and serene alpine lakes. Jenny Lake: Hike around the lake or take a boat ride with views straight out of a postcard. Snake River Overlook: A legendary photo spot made famous by Ansel Adams. Moose Visitor Center: Great for learning about local wildlife and trails.
Stop 2: Jackson, Wyoming
Charming, quirky, and unmistakably Western, Jackson is the cultural heart of the region. It blends cowboy roots with upscale style. Town Square: Famous for its elk antler arches and boutique shops. Jackson Hole Rodeo (summer): An authentic and exciting slice of Americana. Cafés & Galleries: Enjoy everything from Western art to world-class coffee.
Stop 3: Thermopolis, Wyoming
Time to unwind! Thermopolis is home to some of the largest mineral hot springs in the world. Hot Springs State Park: Soak in naturally heated pools – completely free and right in town. Wyoming Dinosaur Center: A must for fossil fans of all ages.
Stop 4: Snowy Range Scenic Byway
One of Wyoming’s best-kept secrets, the Snowy Range is a high-altitude dreamland near Saratoga. Mirror Lake: A picture-perfect alpine lake ideal for short hikes and photos. Libby Creek Falls: A serene waterfall surrounded by pine forest. This road is typically open June through October – but during that time, it offers crisp mountain air, wildflowers, and unbeatable views.
Stop 5: Denver, Colorado
Finally, you’ll arrive in the vibrant, fast-growing city of Denver – nestled right at the foot of the Rockies. Union Station: A historic train station turned hotspot with chic cafés, bars, and shops. Denver Botanic Gardens: A peaceful urban oasis filled with plant life from around the world. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge: Just outside the city, this nature preserve is home to bison, deer, birds, and scenic walking trails.
Wildlife Watch: Especially in Yellowstone and Grand Teton – drive slow, keep your distance, and never approach animals.
Altitude Awareness: Many areas are above 6,500 feet (2,000 m). Stay hydrated and take it easy if you’re not used to the elevation.
Where to Stay: From cozy mountain cabins to scenic campgrounds, this route offers plenty of overnight gems.
