Phuket is a vibrant island filled with stunning beaches, rich culture, and plenty of adventure – but there are also a few things you should keep in mind to enjoy your stay to the fullest. From local etiquette and beach safety to practical tips for transportation and restaurants, this guide will show you what to do – and what to avoid – so your time on Phuket is smooth, relaxing, and truly unforgettable.

Do’s – What You Should Definitely Do in Phuket

1. Explore the island early in the morning by scooter

🛵 Between 7 AM and 10 AM, Phuket is at its most enjoyable – less traffic, cooler temperatures, and many beaches are still nearly empty. It’s the perfect time to discover hidden bays and scenic coastal roads.

2. Try street food – but eat where locals eat

🍜 The best dishes are often not found in tourist restaurants but at small street stalls with plastic chairs. If you see many locals eating there, it’s usually a great sign.

3. Plan time for sunsets

🌅 Many visitors experience Phuket only during the day – yet sunsets at viewpoints in the south or along the west coast beaches are often among the most magical moments on the island.

4. Discover more than just Patong

🧭 Patong may be famous, but Phuket has many other sides to explore – quiet beaches in the north, beautiful temples, scenic viewpoints, and small coastal villages.

5. Look for small beaches and hidden coves

🌴 Some of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches are not visible from the road. Often, small paths or stairways through the jungle lead to stunning secluded bays.

6. Always carry enough water

💧 The tropical heat can easily be underestimated. Especially when riding a scooter or visiting viewpoints, it’s wise to always keep a bottle of water with you.

Don’ts – What You Should Avoid in Phuket

1. Arriving in Phuket without internet access

📶 Buying a SIM card after arrival or traveling without mobile data? For apps like Grab, Google Maps, or restaurant searches, having internet access is essential in Phuket. Installing an eSIM before your trip also saves time and works immediately after landing.

We used the eSIM from Saily during our time in Thailand.

2. Ignoring currents and red flags

⚠️ On some days, currents can become surprisingly strong. Red flags mean no swimming and should always be taken seriously.

3. Riding a scooter without experience

🛵 Traffic in Phuket can be chaotic, with left-hand driving and sometimes poor road conditions. If you’re unsure, it’s better to use Grab/Bolt, or taxis instead.

4. Feeding monkeys

🐒 At places like Monkey Hill or certain viewpoints, monkeys may look cute – but they can become aggressive and often steal food or sunglasses.

5. Lying directly under coconut palms

🌴 Coconuts can weigh several kilograms and do occasionally fall from trees. At the beach, it’s safer to keep a bit of distance from palm trees.

6. Underestimating low tide

🌊 During very low tide, the water may be much farther out and the beach can appear rockier. This can also affect snorkeling conditions.

7. Visiting only the most famous beach

⛱️ Many travelers stay at just one beach – yet some of the island’s most beautiful spots are the smaller hidden bays.

If you’re looking for the island’s most beautiful beaches, check out my guide The 7 Most Beautiful Beaches in Phuket – My Guide with Map, which features our personal favorites along with helpful tips and a map overview.

8. Spending your entire trip only at beach clubs

🍹 Phuket has fantastic beach clubs – but it also offers natural beaches, night markets, temples, and small local restaurants that often feel far more authentic.

9. Underestimating the tropical sun

🌞 The sun in Thailand is much stronger than in Europe. Without sunscreen or a hat, you can get sunburned much faster than you might expect.

Our conclusion: Phuket offers far more than just famous beaches and lively tourist areas. By keeping a few simple do’s and don’ts in mind, you can enjoy a relaxed stay while experiencing the island’s culture, nature, and unique atmosphere.
