Koh Yao Yai is, for me, one of the most relaxing islands in southern Thailand. Here you’ll find abundant nature, quiet beaches, cozy cafés, and the peaceful island vibe many travelers dream of. What makes it truly special is that it’s not about ticking off endless attractions – Koh Yao Yai is for laid-back beach days, delicious food, small scooter adventures, and breathtaking sunsets:

1. Why Koh Yao Yai is Worth Visiting
Koh Yao Yai is situated between Phuket and Krabi in Phang Nga Bay and, despite its easy accessibility, feels far more untouched than many other islands in the region. This unique combination appeals to many travelers – you can get there quickly, yet still enjoy more peace, nature, and space than at the more well-known destinations.
2. Koh Yao Yai Highlights: Beaches, Restaurants & More
The island delights with tranquil beaches, excellent food, laid-back spots, and a truly authentic island vibe. Here are some of our top highlights:
Beautiful Beaches
The beaches are undoubtedly a major highlight. Many are quieter and less developed than Phuket’s, offering a mix of long sandy stretches, natural coves, and calm snorkeling spots. Our favorites include:
- Loh Pared Beach – expansive, turquoise, and gently sloping
- Laem Haad Beach – spectacular and perfect for a walk
- Ao Muong Beach – natural, ideal for snorkeling and relaxing
- Son Bay Beach – loved by locals, perfect for sunsets
- Ao Sai Beach – wild, peaceful, and in the southeast of the island

Sunsets
Evenings on Koh Yao Yai are perfect for relaxed moments. The western beaches, especially around Loh Pared Beach, offer stunning sunset views with calm, colorful skies.
Food & Restaurants
The culinary scene pleasantly surprised us. Many small, laid-back restaurants and cafés feel far from touristy – often with open kitchens, welcoming staff, and delicious Thai food. Our personal favorites:
- Som Tum Restaurant – affordable and authentic Thai dishes
- EAT it – Koh Yao – standout Tom Kha soups
- Kah Kah – ideal stop before or after Laem Haad Beach
- Roniao Café – excellent smoothies
- ขนมบ้าบิ่น จ๊ะรี่ – sweet Thai coconut rice pancakes, perfect as a beach snack

Massages & Relaxing Breaks
If you want to take a break and unwind, Koh Yao Yai offers some excellent massage options. The best massage we experienced during our entire Thailand trip was at Baizy Massage and Salon – a place where you can completely relax, and afterward, we even received fresh fruit, tea, and pastries – a lovely touch.

Elephants on the Island
Occasionally, you might spot elephants strolling along the roads. These gentle giants are likely part of the Koh Yao Elephant Care & House. We chose not to visit tourist-focused animal attractions on the island, as we prefer not to support keeping animals for tourism purposes.

Private Longtail Boat Tours to Hong Island
Another highlight on Koh Yao Yai is taking a private longtail boat tour, for example to Hong Island. There are several local providers on the island, including KNK Motorbike For Rent. From what we found on site, many operators offer very similar conditions – typically around 6 to 7 hours of boat time, flexible stopovers, and the option to explore Hong Island and other nearby spots at your own pace. The national park fee usually applies in addition, and it’s best to confirm the exact price directly on site, as rates can change. If you’re traveling without a large group, a private longtail boat tour is a fantastic way to explore the area at your own rhythm.
3. Koh Yao Yai Tips: Duration, Getting There, Transportation & Best Season
How many days should you stay?
I’d recommend setting aside at least 3–5 days for Koh Yao Yai – the island is large enough to explore its many corners.
- 2 days: Possible if you either want to see a lot without relaxing, or relax a lot and only hit a few highlights.
- 3 days: Allows you to combine beaches, try local restaurants, and explore the island.
- 4–5 days: Ideal for beach days, excursions, café or massage breaks.
Getting to Koh Yao Yai
- From Phuket: Tourist transfers usually depart from Bang Rong Pier in Phuket and can be easily booked on-site. On Koh Yao Yai, the boats arrive at either Chong Lard Pier or Klong Hia Pier. We paid 400 THB per person for a one-way ride, which takes around 30 minutes.
- From Koh Yao Noi: You can also book the transfer from Koh Yao Noi to Koh Yao Yai directly at the pier. Single longtail boats connect Manoh Pier on Koh Yao Noi with Chong Lard Pier on Koh Yao Yai. We paid 100 THB per person for a one-way ride, which takes around 10 minutes.
Getting Around the Island
- As soon as you arrive at the pier, you’ll find several scooter rental options. Prices are usually around 250 THB per day, and we’ve marked the providers directly in our Google My Map for easy reference.
- A scooter is by far the best way to explore Koh Yao Yai. The island is quite spread out, with accommodations, restaurants, and beaches scattered across different areas. Having your own scooter gives you far more flexibility than relying on individual transfers or taxis – you can stop whenever you like, discover hidden spots, and move at your own pace.
- Tip: During peak season, it’s a good idea to reserve your scooter in advance via WhatsApp, as popular models can get fully booked quickly.
Best Time to Visit
November–April is ideal for stable weather on the Andaman coast. June–October is greener, quieter, and cheaper but more unpredictable. We visited in February 2026 during peak season, enjoying sunny days and uncrowded beaches.
4. Recommended Hotels on Koh Yao Yai
Koh Yao Yai offers both small, tranquil accommodations and more luxurious beachfront resorts. Depending on your travel style, you can choose to stay close to nature in a relaxed setting or indulge in a more exclusive island experience.
The Secret Garden
If you’re looking for a peaceful, green, and well-maintained place to stay, The Secret Garden Homestay Koh Yao Yai is a fantastic option. The property is relatively new, clean, and thoughtfully designed – perfect for travelers who prefer a small, intimate setting over a large resort.
We especially appreciated its convenient location near the southern beaches and a local bakery, making it easy to combine relaxed beach days with small stops along the way. For anyone seeking a quiet, personal, and well-kept accommodation on Koh Yao Yai, this homestay comes highly recommended in our opinion.

Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa
If you’re looking for a more luxurious and relaxing stay right by the sea, the Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa is one of the island’s most well-known options. The resort is beautifully situated on a quiet bay on the west coast of Koh Yao Yai, close to Loh Pared Beach.
