Getting Around Uzbekistan – Trains, Flights & the Best Transport Options

Getting around Uzbekistan is easier than many travelers expect. For culture lovers and itinerary-based trips, the country offers a great mix of modern trains, affordable domestic flights, and straightforward taxi options. Whether you’re traveling between Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara or exploring more remote regions – here’s what’s truly worth using:

Train Travel in Uzbekistan – The Best Option

For most travelers, trains are the most comfortable and efficient way to get around. The high-speed Afrosiyob train is especially recommended. Key advantages:

  • Fast (e.g. Tashkent → Samarkand in around 2 hours)
  • Modern & air-conditioned
  • Very reliable
  • Popular routes: Tashkent → Samarkand, Samarkand → Bukhara (book early!)
  • This is the best choice for your Silk Road itinerary.

Booking Tickets – The Easiest Way

The simplest way to book train tickets is via the official Uzrailway Tickets app:

  • Online booking for all major routes
  • Easy payment by credit card
  • Tickets stored directly on your smartphone
  • Download the Uzrailway Tickets app:
  • Alternative: You can also buy tickets at the station – but expect queues and limited availability.

Taxis & Ride Apps – Flexible & Affordable

For shorter distances or getting around cities, taxis are the easiest option. The best choice is the Yandex Go app. It offers:

  • Very low prices
  • Transparent fares
  • No need to negotiate
  • Ideal for routes such as:
    • Train station → hotel
    • Old town → Chor Minor
  • Alternative: Local taxis (always agree on the price in advance!)

Domestic Flights – Useful for Long Distances

For longer distances, flights can save significant time. The main airline is Uzbekistan Airways. The most useful connections include Bukhara → Tashkent or Tashkent → Khiva (via Urgench).

Flights are a great way to complement your train journey – though they offer less flexibility and require additional transfers.

Getting Around Tashkent – Metro & Scooters

While most cities in Uzbekistan are best explored by taxi, Tashkent offers more variety when it comes to transportation.

Tashkent Metro – A Sight in Itself

The metro in Tashkent is not just practical – it’s an attraction on its own. Many stations are elaborately designed and feel more like small museums than typical subway stops. Some of the most beautiful stations include Alisher Navoiy (elegant domes and columns), Kosmonavtlar (space-themed design) and Mustaqillik Maydoni (stunning marble interiors).

The metro system is also affordable and well-developed – perfect for avoiding traffic.

E-Scooters & Modern Mobility

In addition, you can rent e-scooters in Tashkent via Yandex Go. They are flexible, easy to use, and ideal for short distances – a great complement to the metro.

Buses & Marshrutkas – Secondary Options

There are also buses and so-called marshrutkas (shared minibuses), but they play a minor role for most travelers. Reasons include:

  • Less comfort
  • Unclear schedules
  • Language barriers
  • My recommendation: Only use them if you’re highly flexible or looking for a more local experience.

The Best Transport Combination for Your Trip

For a typical 1–2 week itinerary through Uzbekistan, this combination works best:

  • 🚄 Train for long distances between cities
  • 🚕 Taxi / Yandex Go within cities
  • ✈️ Flights optional for longer routes
  • Example route (also works in reverse depending on ticket prices and availability):
    • Tashkent → Samarkand (train)
    • Samarkand → Bukhara (train)
    • Bukhara → Khiva (train)
    • Khiva → Tashkent (flight)

Practical Travel Tips

  • Book train tickets as early as possible.
  • Bring snacks for the journey or carry small cash for onboard vendors.
  • Don’t plan connections too tightly.
  • Buy metro tickets at the counter for classic tickets – or pay directly at the turnstile with a credit card or smartphone.

Our conclusion: Traveling in Uzbekistan is surprisingly well organized. With modern trains, affordable taxis, and a few strategic flight connections, getting from A to B is quick and hassle-free. The combination of train travel and Yandex Go is ideal for independent trips. In the modern capital of Tashkent, you can also take advantage of the metro and e-scooters for even more flexibility.
