48 Hours in Tashkent: Metro Stations, Bazaars & Modern Uzbekistan

Posted by

Two days in Tashkent feel completely different from Bukhara or Samarkand. Instead of medieval old towns and Silk Road charm, you’ll find a modern capital with wide boulevards, spectacular metro stations, vibrant bazaars, and an unexpected amount of green space. After the 1966 earthquake, Tashkent was largely rebuilt – which is why Soviet monumental architecture now meets modern glass façades and expansive parks.

If you’re traveling through Uzbekistan, you’ll likely start or end your journey here. And that’s exactly why it’s worth planning at least 48 hours in Tashkent.

Day 1: Bazaars, Old Town & Capital Vibes

Morning – Arrive & Head Straight to Chorsu Bazaar

After arriving, start strong with one of the city’s most authentic spots: Chorsu Bazaar. Beneath its striking blue dome, you’ll find spices, nuts, dried fruits, fresh bread, vegetables, and local snacks. It’s the perfect place to dive straight into everyday life in Tashkent. Highly recommended:

  • Take photos around the market hall
  • Try traditional Uzbek non bread
  • Buy dried apricots & nuts

Lunch – Hazrati Imam Complex

Just a few minutes away lies the Hazrati Imam Complex – the city’s historic religious center. This spacious ensemble of mosques, madrasas, and open courtyards creates a calm, traditional contrast to the modern capital and is one of Uzbekistan’s most important spiritual sites. Particularly impressive are the large squares, the harmonious architecture with turquoise details, and the relaxed atmosphere away from the city’s traffic.

You’ll notice that parts of the complex feel surprisingly modern, clean, and spacious. The reason: the entire area has been restored, expanded, and reorganized in several phases. Construction work may still occur in some areas (as of 2026). Still, a visit is absolutely worth it – especially because the complex shows how Uzbekistan is reinterpreting its religious and cultural heritage today, making traditional architecture accessible in a modernized form.

Afternoon – Metro Stations as Attractions

Tashkent’s metro is considered one of the most beautiful in the former Soviet Union. Each station has its own design – many resemble palaces rather than subway stops. Don’t miss:

  • Alisher Navoiyi Station: Grand and classical
  • Kosmonavtlar Station: Space-themed, blue lighting, futuristic
  • Mustaqillik Maydoni Station: Elegant & centrally located

Tip: Single rides are very affordable. Simply pay contactless at the turnstile or buy a ticket at the counter.

Evening – Tashkent City Park & Water Show

In the evening, head to Tashkent City Park. This is where Tashkent reveals its futuristic side: wide walkways, skyline views, cafés, and illuminated water features.

The highlight is the musical water show, usually after sunset. Depending on the season, shows often run between 7:30 PM and 10:00 PM in multiple rounds (check times locally).

Right next door is the BOBOY Tashkent City Mall – perfect for snacks, shopping, or a break in the air conditioning.

Day 2: Metro, Modernity & City Life

Morning – Mustaqillik Maydoni & Amir Timur Square

Start your second day at Mustaqillik Maydoni – Independence Square. Wide avenues, monuments, and well-maintained grounds showcase the representative side of the capital.

From there, walk along Tashkent’s Broadway – also known as Sayilgoh Street – to Amir Timur Square, the central plaza featuring the equestrian statue of Amir Timur.

Lunch – Culinary Break

For lunch, modern spots near hotels or in the city center are a great choice:

  • Мясной Steak House: High-quality steak restaurant with stylish ambiance
  • Pro. Хинкали: Very popular for Georgian cuisine & dumplings
  • Cafe Bon!: Great for coffee, breakfast, or light meals

Afternoon – Free Time & Explore more of Tashkent

Now it’s time to experience the capital at your own pace:

  • Visit a museum, e.g. the Davlat Amaliy San’at Muzeyi for traditional Uzbek handicrafts
  • Take a selfie at the “I love Tashkent” sign
  • Visit the elegant Navoi Theatre with its rich history
  • Explore the modern entertainment complex Magic City Tashkent – especially popular in the evening
  • Discover more metro stations
  • Stop for coffee
  • Stroll through modern streets, parks, and districts like Tashkent City Park, Mirabad, and Broadway (Sayilgoh Street)

Evening – Final Impressions

Tashkent truly comes alive in the evening. Perfect for:

  • Dinner with modern Uzbek cuisine
  • A rooftop bar with views over the city
  • Preparing for your next train journey to Samarkand or Bukhara
