When is the best time to visit Albania? The short answer: May. The slightly longer answer is below – including climate data, seasonal highlights, and my personal experience from two weeks in Albania spent right on the border between May and June.
Albania’s Climate – A Quick Overview
Albania has very different climatic conditions depending on the region. The coast enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with dry, sunny summers and mild, rainy winters. Inland and mountainous areas have a much harsher climate – winters can get very cold, with temperatures dropping as low as 14°F (–10°C) and heavy snowfall. For most travelers exploring the Albanian Riviera, the coastal climate is the one that matters most – and it’s wonderfully pleasant when you visit at the right time.

The Four Travel Seasons at a Glance
Spring – March to May
Spring arrives in March – wildflowers begin blooming in the south, but the weather remains unpredictable, so packing layers is a good idea. April is fantastic for exploring historic sites such as Butrint before the summer heat arrives – although the sea is still too cold for swimming. May is the absolute sweet spot: beach clubs begin opening, lower mountain areas become accessible, and prices are still very reasonable. The water has already reached a pleasant 66°F (19°C) – ideal for swimming without having to share the beaches with thousands of other travelers.
My personal experience: We visited Albania in May, and the weather was simply perfect. Warm days, crystal-clear water, hardly any tourists – and accommodation prices were still at low-season levels. As soon as June arrived, accommodation prices noticeably increased – despite virtually identical weather. That’s why May is my absolute recommendation.

Summer – June to August
June marks the beginning of summer – excellent beach weather and an ideal time for hiking in the mountains before extreme heat reaches the valleys. The sea is a pleasant 72°F (22°C), and while the beaches are getting busier, peak season hasn’t fully arrived yet.
July and August are the height of the season: crowded beaches, high temperatures inland, and the highest prices of the year. If you’re traveling in August, you should book your accommodation and rental car months in advance. Summer is perfectly suitable for a beach vacation – but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, lower prices, and a more authentic experience, this isn’t the ideal time to visit.
Fall – September to October
September is the golden month. The summer heat starts to fade, with temperatures settling into a pleasant mid-70s to low-80s°F – warm enough for swimming and outdoor activities, but considerably quieter than the height of summer. At 75°F (24°C), the sea is still at perfect swimming temperature, while prices drop back to a more reasonable level. Rainfall increases in October, particularly in the north – but autumn showers typically alternate with sunny periods. Nights become cooler, especially in the mountains.
September is the second-best option for anyone who missed May – warm water, fewer crowds, and good prices.
Winter – November to February
Winter in Albania is peaceful and picturesque – although many businesses close completely. The coldest months are January and February, with coastal temperatures around 52–55°F (11–13°C). For city trips to Tirana, Berat, or Gjirokastër, winter is perfectly manageable – but it’s not suitable for a beach vacation along the Albanian Riviera. If you visit Albania in winter, you’ll find very low prices and hardly any tourists. Just be prepared for many restaurants and accommodations in coastal towns to be closed.
Seasonal Highlights – Festivals & Public Holidays
| Date | Festival / Public Holiday |
| January 1 | New Year’s Day |
| March 14 | Dita e Verës – Albania’s traditional Spring Day festival |
| March 22 | Fitorja e Demokracisë – Democracy Day |
| March/April | Easter holidays – variable |
| May 1 | Labour Day |
| November 28 | Independence Day – Albania’s biggest national holiday |
| December 25 | Christmas Day |
Important: Around November 28, Albania becomes especially festive. If you travel during this time, you’ll experience one of the liveliest periods of the year in Albania – but you should also expect busier cities and higher prices.

My Recommendation – At a Glance
🥇 May – My Absolute Favorite
Perfect weather, pleasant water temperatures, few tourists, and the lowest beach season prices. Travel to Albania in May if you’re flexible.
🥈 September – The Second-Best Option
September through December are probably the best months for Albania. The weather is beautiful, the sea is warmer than in May, and the beaches are quieter.
🥉 June – Great, But Already More Expensive
We saw a price difference between May and June despite similar weather. June is a good choice if you can’t travel at another time, but book early and expect higher prices.
⚠️ July & August – Only If You Don’t Mind the Crowds
Book well in advance to enjoy the lively summer atmosphere. The summer school holiday period is not the best choice for those looking for peace and quiet.
❌ November to March – Best for City Trips
Not for a Riviera beach vacation, but great for Tirana, Berat, and Gjirokastër in these months: Expect low prices and a peaceful atmosphere.
Our conclusion: Albania is a year-round destination, but not every season is ideal for every type of traveler. For the perfect combination of beautiful beaches, pleasant temperatures, quiet coves, and reasonable prices, visit in May or September. If you prefer a bustling summer atmosphere and lively beach clubs, July and August are the months for you. I visited Albania in May and June, and if I were booking my trip tomorrow, I’d choose May again without hesitation.
