After two weeks in Albania, I know exactly what earned its place in my suitcase – and what didn’t. I used almost everything I packed at least once, but there were also a few things I could have easily left at home. In this Albania packing list, I’m sharing the things I’d definitely pack again – from beach and water essentials to practical travel gear and photography equipment. And because packing light is always easier when you know what you don’t need, I’ll also share the items I’d leave at home next time:
🎒 Luggage & Travel Essentials
Carry-on Backpack
A backpack is essential for day trips and boat tours. A lightweight, foldable backpack is ideal – it fits easily into your carry-on luggage and will likely become one of the things you use most during your trip.
Cash Wallet
Cash is still widely used in Albania, and some places only accept cash. A compact, secure wallet for both banknotes and coins is therefore a must. Ideally, choose one that can be carried close to your body.
Power Bank
At remote beaches and during long days of exploring, charging opportunities can be few and far between. A power bank with enough capacity for your phone, camera, and drone is an absolute essential.
SD Card Adapter
If you take lots of photos and videos, you’ll fill up your memory cards surprisingly quickly. An SD card adapter lets you transfer your photos and videos directly to your phone or laptop – incredibly handy when you’re using it every day.
Charging Cables
Pack all the charging cables you need for your phone, camera, drone, and power bank – and ideally bring a universal cable that works with several devices.
🏖️ Beach & Water Essentials
Water Shoes – an absolute must
This is the single most important item on the entire list. The beaches around Himarë, Sarandë, and Ksamil are predominantly pebble beaches – and getting into the water without water shoes can be seriously uncomfortable, if not downright painful.
Beach Blanket
At many Albanian beaches, you can simply bring your own blanket or towel – there’s often no entrance fee and no obligation to rent a sun lounger. A lightweight, quick-drying beach blanket is therefore incredibly useful.
Lightweight Towel
A compact microfiber towel dries quickly, takes up very little space, and is perfect for boat trips, kayaking, and spontaneous swims.
Beach Pillow
An inflatable beach pillow can make long days on Albania’s pebble beaches much more comfortable. It’s lightweight, packs down small, and barely takes up any space in your suitcase.
Flip-Flops
For walking from the parking area to the beach, grabbing dinner, or strolling through town – flip-flops are an everyday essential.
Travel Cutlery for Beach Snacks
If you pick up byrek from a bakery or grab snacks from a local market, a small set of travel cutlery can be surprisingly useful. It may sound like a minor detail – but you’ll appreciate having it.
👕 Clothing
UPF Shirt
For hikes to Filikuri Beach, boat trips, and kayaking, a UPF shirt is a must. The Albanian sun can be much stronger than it feels – especially out on the water, where there’s little to no shade.
Beachwear
Pack lightweight shorts, swimsuits, and bikinis – ideally several sets, so you always have something dry to put on.
Smart-Casual Evening Outfit
From Tirana’s Blloku neighborhood to the promenade in Sarandë and dinner in Berat, Albania offers plenty of opportunities to dress up a little. One or two smart outfits are more than enough.
Light Scarf
If you’re planning to visit religious sites such as churches or mosques, a lightweight scarf can be useful for covering your shoulders or knees when required. It takes up virtually no space and is one of those items that’s easy to overlook.
☀️ Sun Protection & Toiletries
Sunscreen – and plenty of it
The Albanian sun is strong – particularly in May and June, when you may not yet be used to the intense sunshine. Pack a high SPF and reapply regularly, especially when spending time on the water.
Sunglasses
The intense Mediterranean light can be surprisingly bright, especially against the white buildings of Berat. A good pair of sunglasses is essential.
Cap / Sun Hat
A cap or sun hat provides valuable protection during long beach days, boat trips, and hikes. It’s particularly important on the water, where shade can be hard to find.
📷 Photography Gear
Drone – absolutely worth bringing
Albania is a dream destination for drone photography – from the rock formations in the water at Pulëbardha Beach and Porto Palermo Castle sitting on its peninsula to the turquoise waters of Aquarium Beach viewed from above. Some of the most spectacular shots of the trip can be captured from the air. For me, bringing the drone was one of the best decisions I made for this trip.
Camera & Photography Gear
Good photography equipment is well worth bringing to Albania. The light, colors, and landscapes are exceptional. Whether you’re using a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or the latest generation of iPhone, Albania rewards you with incredible photo opportunities.
🚫 What I Would Leave at Home
Too Many Clothes
Albania is a relaxed travel destination, and you’ll rarely need formal outfits. One or two smart outfits for evenings are more than enough. Use the extra space in your suitcase for practical beachwear and hiking clothes instead.
Heavy Hiking Boots
For most hikes in Albania – including the descent to Filikuri Beach – sturdy sneakers or lightweight hiking sandals are perfectly sufficient. Heavy hiking boots are usually overkill and take up valuable luggage space.
Rain Jacket in Summer
From May to September, rain is relatively uncommon along the Albanian Riviera, so a rain jacket isn’t really necessary during the summer months. A lightweight windbreaker is more than enough for cooler evenings or boat trips.
🛒 My Albania Amazon Packing List
I’ve put together all the products from this Albania packing list in one Amazon list – from water shoes and a drone to beach pillows and other travel essentials. That way, you can easily find everything you might need for your Albania vacation in one place.
Our conclusion: The three most important things to pack for Albania? Water shoes, sunscreen, and a drone. If you have these three essentials in your suitcase, you’re already prepared for most of what Albania has to offer. Everything else can be kept relatively simple – Albania is an easy-going destination that doesn’t require a huge amount of gear, just an open mind, a sense of adventure, and plenty of curiosity.
