At the southern end of Lake Ohrid, almost where North Macedonia meets Albania, lies one of the most idyllic places we visited on our trip: Sveti Naum Monastery. Surrounded by centuries-old stone walls, a crystal-clear spring and shady avenues lined with peacocks, it is easy to forget that you are only here for a day trip – rather than spending an entire week on holiday.
Getting to Sveti Naum – By Rental Car or Relaxing Boat Trip
We drove from Ohrid to Sveti Naum by rental car. The road is well maintained and the journey takes around 45 minutes. The final kilometres wind scenically along the shores of Lake Ohrid, making the drive part of the experience.
If you do not have a rental car, there is no need to miss out on this beautiful day trip. Regular boat trips depart from Ohrid and take you directly to the monastery:
- Departure: Daily at 10:15 am from Boat Armada, Port of Ohrid
- Total duration: Around 7 hours, including the boat ride, time at the monastery and return journey
- Boat trip: A relaxing cruise across the calm waters of Lake Ohrid, accompanied by music
- On board: A bar serving drinks and cocktails, plus Wi-Fi
- At Sveti Naum: Explore the monastery independently at your own pace, or optionally join a guide to learn more about the history of the complex
- Why choose the boat over a rental car: No need to look for parking, beautiful views of the lake from the water and a particularly relaxing option if you are travelling without your own vehicle

Sveti Naum Monastery – Peace, Frescoes and Nature
Entrance Fee and Costs – Surprisingly Affordable
Visiting the monastery itself is free of charge. If you arrive by rental car, you only have to pay a small parking fee of around €1. The fee can even be paid directly in euros – very convenient if you do not have any Macedonian denars with you.
The Source of Lake Ohrid – Boats, a Walking Trail and a Very Cold Insider Tip
The area surrounding the monastery is wonderfully natural and peaceful. Free-roaming peacocks wander between the ancient stone buildings, while shady trees provide some welcome relief as you explore the grounds. Along the small river docks, you will also find several restaurants overlooking the spring-fed river – a lovely spot to stop for lunch or a drink before or after visiting the church.
One of the absolute highlights: The source of Lake Ohrid. From here, you can either take a short boat ride across the turquoise spring water or follow the approximately 15-minute walking trail along the gravel road P501, passing several small chapels along the way. And for anyone brave enough, there is an especially unusual experience: at the chapel “Параклис „Света Богородица“”, you can actually wade through a pool filled with the spring water. It is absolutely freezing – but definitely an experience you will remember.
Our tip: Bring your drone! For me, the aerial landscapes and monastery shots were among the most beautiful photo opportunities of our entire trip. If you are still looking for the right photography and travel gear, my Amazon list with my favourite tech gadgets includes the equipment I use to capture shots like these.
More Tips for Visiting Sveti Naum Monastery
- Best time to visit: We visited in the afternoon and the monastery grounds were still pleasantly uncrowded. During the summer months, however, I recommend arriving as early as possible before the tour groups from Ohrid arrive – especially if you want peaceful surroundings and the best conditions for photography and drone shots.
- Allow enough time: Plan around 2–3 hours to explore the monastery and the source of Lake Ohrid without rushing.
- Bring some cash: Carry a few small notes, either Macedonian denars or euros. Card payments are not accepted everywhere in the area.
- Don’t forget sun protection: Especially during the summer months, there is limited shade along the lakeshore, so sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water are essential.
Our conclusion: Sveti Naum is a fascinating place situated in an idyllic setting on the shores of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. It is the kind of place where you can truly appreciate the peace and tranquillity of nature beyond the country’s well-known attractions. A trip to Sveti Naum is well worth it – and it is easy to combine with a visit to Ohrid itself. For us, it was without a doubt one of the most beautiful day trips on Lake Ohrid.
