Soft bells chiming and snow crunching beneath the runners – winter carriage rides are among the most romantic experiences Bavaria has to offer. Especially around Munich and in the Alpine foothills, these rides are perfect for a memorable winter day trip.
Below, we present 4 classic providers as well as 4 special carriage experiences featuring famous sights:
Classic Providers for Winter Carriage & Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides
1. Lamprechthof – Lenggries (District of Bad Tölz–Wolfratshausen)
What makes it special? Lamprechthof is a traditional family-run farm in the Isarwinkel region. In winter, horse-drawn sleighs glide through snow-covered meadows, along forest edges, with open views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains.
What will you see along the way? Isar floodplains, Alpine panoramas, small hamlets around Lenggries – a true postcard scene on clear days.
Getting there: By car from Munich approx. 1 hour. Alternatively, take the Bavarian regional train to Lenggries, followed by a short taxi ride.
Duration & offer: Usually 30–60 minutes, longer rides available on request. Blankets included, sometimes combined with mulled wine or hot punch for children.
Who is it for? Couples, families, small groups – authentic, relaxed, and fairly priced.
3. Kutschfahrten Würmtal – Gauting (west of Munich)
What makes it special? One of the few opportunities for rural carriage rides close to Munich. With sufficient snow, sleigh-style rides are also offered.
What will you see? Würmtal meadows, open fields, small forest sections – peaceful and surprisingly idyllic given the proximity to the city.
Getting there: S-Bahn to Gauting or by car (approx. 30 minutes from Munich).
Duration & offer: Individually planned (30–90 minutes), also suitable for private occasions.
5. Garmisch–Partenkirchen – Carriage Ride through Town
Highlight: This ride combines winter romance with the charming atmosphere and surroundings of the town.
How it works: Pick-up at your hotel or Garmisch–Partenkirchen train station. From there, the route continues to Partenkirchen for a short walk, followed by a private one-hour carriage ride through town.
What makes it special: Icicles, Lüftlmalerei frescoes, and Alpine panoramas – particularly impressive in winter.
Our conclusion: Whether close to Munich or deep in the Alps – winter carriage rides are calming, romantic, and a wonderful surprise. With the right planning, they turn into an unforgettable winter experience.
