What We Would Do Differently in Krabi – Our Do’s & Don’ts

Krabi is one of those destinations that seems simple at first glance – beautiful beaches, a few excursions, great food. But looking back, there are definitely things we would do differently. Many of the truly special moments in Krabi don’t just happen by chance – they come when you know when, where, and how to approach certain experiences. At the same time, there are common mistakes that can quickly cost you time, energy, or even affect your overall vibe. To help you avoid that, here are our most important learnings:

DO’s – Things You Should Definitely Do in Krabi

🌊 Plan Nature & Experiences Intentionally

Some of the most beautiful places in Krabi only feel truly magical at the right time of day.

  • Phra Nang Beach is the perfect example: arrive early in the morning, and you’ll experience one of the most stunning bays almost to yourself. Arrive at midday, and you’ll be sharing it with crowds.
  • The same applies to activities – plan at least one boat tour or kayaking trip. Many of Krabi’s most spectacular landscapes – hidden bays, small islands, and lagoons – are only accessible from the water. Discover our selection of Krabi tours
  • Also rethink how you approach sunsets. Instead of watching it from Ao Nang, find an elevated viewpoint or scenic spot – the perspective from above can make a dramatic difference.

🍜 Experience Food & Culture Properly

Krabi has far more to offer when it comes to food than it might seem at first.

  • Plan visits to night markets intentionally – not just as a spontaneous evening option. They are some of the best places to try a variety of dishes and experience the local atmosphere.
  • At the same time, make an effort to visit smaller, local restaurants. These are often the places where you’ll find the best food – far away from typical tourist menus. I’ve listed our favorites in the Krabi Travel Guide.
  • And maybe the most important tip: try dishes you’ve never had before. Those small culinary experiments are often what you’ll remember most.

🧘 Mindset & Planning Make All the Difference

One of the biggest mistakes is treating Krabi as just a quick stopover.

  • If you give it a bit of time, you’ll quickly realize how versatile the region is – and how well relaxed days can be combined with small adventures. Plan at least 4–5 days to truly experience it: Krabi in 4–5 Days – Your Perfect Travel Itinerary.
  • A scooter can make a difference. Many beautiful spots are hard to reach without your own transport, and you’ll have much more flexibility.
  • Choosing the right accommodation also matters. Ao Nang is convenient, but not automatically the best option for everyone. Depending on what you’re looking for, quieter areas like Klong Muang might suit you much better.

DON’Ts – Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many mistakes in Krabi seem small – but can have a big impact on your experience.

  • One of the most common: visiting beaches at the wrong time of day. Midday often feels crowded and overly hot, while mornings and late afternoons are much more relaxed. It’s also helpful to check the local tides in advance (see tide table).
  • Another issue is trying to see too much in too little time. Krabi isn’t a destination to simply tick off a list – otherwise, you’ll miss what makes it special.
  • And not every beach is perfect, not every spot looks like Instagram. If you approach it with an open mindset, you’ll enjoy it much more.

There are also a few practical things you shouldn’t underestimate:

  • Going into the water without water shoes can quickly become uncomfortable
  • Beachfront restaurants aren’t automatically the best
  • Cash is often necessary
  • The sun is more intense than you think
  • Riding a scooter without experience can be risky

Our Personal Learnings

Looking back, a few things made the biggest difference for us.

  • The most important one: Plan your days intentionally – but don’t overpack them.
  • The perfect balance for us was always: One highlight (e.g., a beach or excursion) + relaxed time without a fixed plan.
  • Also keep an eye on transfers early on: Especially when it comes to boats, piers, or connections between places, a little planning in advance can save you a lot of stress. Platforms like 12GoAsia can be very helpful in this regard.

Stay Connected in Krabi – Our Tip

One thing we quickly realized in Krabi: having a reliable internet connection makes everything easier. Whether you’re:

  • navigating to your next beach
  • searching for restaurants
  • organizing transfers
  • or simply listening to music by the sea
  • 👉 mobile internet is almost essential
