After the desert landscapes, coastal roads, and wildlife encounters around Cape Town and Hermanus (Part 1 & Part 2), this leg takes us deeper into South Africa’s natural heartland. Vast open spaces, secluded beaches, lagoons, forests, and some of the most iconic highlights of the Garden Route lie ahead. This stretch feels less urban – but far more immersive, greener, and untamed.

Setting Off: Leaving Hermanus Towards De Hoop
After two relaxed days in Hermanus, we hit the road early. Instead of staying on the N2 the entire way, a detour south of Swellendam is highly recommended – into the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The landscape changes noticeably: wide, semi-arid plains, farmland, and very little traffic.
Stop 1: De Hoop Nature Reserve
De Hoop is one of South Africa’s most underrated nature reserves. Towering sand dunes meet the ocean, while zebras, ostriches, and bontebok roam freely in between.
Why you should include De Hoop:
- Breathtaking dune landscapes
- Excellent chances for wildlife sightings
- Coastal hiking trails & scenic viewpoints
- During whale season: cliff-top whale watching

Continuing Towards the Garden Route – Long Distances, Big Contrasts
After De Hoop, it’s back onto the N2. The drive is long but varied. As you approach the Garden Route, the scenery becomes increasingly lush – forests, rivers, and mountains replace the dry plains.
Stop 2: Wilderness (1–2 Nights)
Wilderness is the perfect introduction to the Garden Route. Wide, almost deserted beaches meet lagoons and dense vegetation.
Highlights in Wilderness:
- Endless sandy beaches
- Canoeing or SUP on the Touw River
- Views from the Map of Africa Viewpoint
- A relaxed town for a break or overnight stay

Stop 3: Knysna (1-2 Nights)
Knysna is one of the best-known towns along the Garden Route. It’s set around a large lagoon connected to the ocean through two dramatic rock formations – the Knysna Heads.
Why stop in Knysna?
- Scenic viewpoints at the Knysna Heads
- Waterfront walks
- Great restaurants & cafés
- Optional lagoon boat cruises

Stop 4: Robberg Nature Reserve
Just before Plettenberg Bay lies one of the absolute highlights of this leg – Robberg Nature Reserve. The peninsula offers spectacular coastal hikes, steep cliffs, and large seal colonies.
What makes Robberg so special:
- Several hiking routes (2–9 km)
- Dramatic coastal scenery
- Seals, seabirds & occasional dolphins
- Tip: Do the full loop hike around the peninsula (our hiking guide is available here).
Stop 5: Plettenberg Bay (2-4 Nights)
Plettenberg Bay is the perfect endpoint for this stage of the road trip. The town combines beautiful beaches with nature, excellent accommodation options, and a relaxed holiday vibe.
What awaits you in Plettenberg Bay:
- Stunning beaches like Lookout Beach & Central Beach
- Excellent restaurants & cafés
- An ideal base for trips to Tsitsikamma
Stop 6 (Optional): Tsitsikamma National Park
If you have extra time, don’t miss a detour to Tsitsikamma National Park – either the following day or as an additional stop along the way.
Highlights in Tsitsikamma:
- Storms River Mouth & suspension bridge
- Coastal hiking trails
- Dense forests & rugged coastline
