Some cities are planned as quick stops – and then somehow make you stay longer than expected. Sarandë is exactly that kind of place. The city sits beautifully along a curved bay, the seaside promenade invites you to slow down and wander, restaurants are affordable and surprisingly good, and just a few kilometers outside the city you’ll find beaches that belong among the most beautiful spots of the entire Albanian Riviera. In this Sarandë travel guide, I’ll take you through my personal highlights:

Beaches – The Most Beautiful Bays Around Sarandë
The real beach gems of Sarandë are located slightly outside the city – and that is exactly what makes them so special. If you are willing to drive a few miles with a rental car, you’ll be rewarded with beaches that are spacious, turquoise, and surprisingly peaceful.
I personally visited all three beaches – from the wild and untouched Buneci Beach, to the huge Borsh Beach, to the sunset highlight of Pulëbardha Beach.

Things to Do & Day Trips Around Sarandë
Beyond the beaches, the region offers an impressive mix of history, nature, and unforgettable viewpoints.
1. Lëkurësi Castle – The Best Sunset View Over Sarandë
Lëkurësi Castle sits high above the city and offers one of the most breathtaking views in the entire region – overlooking Sarandë Bay, the nearby islands, and on clear days all the way to Corfu. The best time to visit is during golden hour. When the sun slowly disappears over the Ionian Sea, the view from here is almost impossible to beat.
My tip: Arrive at least one hour before sunset – parking spaces fill up quickly, and you want to enjoy the moment instead of searching for a spot under pressure.
2. Promenáda Saranda – Evening Strolls by the Sea
Sarandë’s seaside promenade is pleasant during the day – but it truly comes alive in the evening. When the lights turn on, restaurants fill up, and the sea reflects the warm evening colors, walking along the waterfront becomes one of the nicest things to do in town. My favorite way to enjoy it? With an ice cream in hand – and I’ll tell you where to get it next.
3. Syri i Kaltër – The Blue Eye as a Day Trip
The Blue Eye, known in Albanian as Syri i Kaltër, is one of Albania’s most fascinating natural wonders. This deep blue spring pushes water to the surface with incredible power, creating an almost unreal natural spectacle. The surrounding area is green and shaded – a refreshing contrast after sunny beach days. It’s an ideal day trip from Sarandë.
4. Gjirokastër – UNESCO World Heritage on a Day Trip
Gjirokastër combines perfectly with a visit to the Blue Eye. The UNESCO World Heritage city in Albania’s inland region impresses with its Ottoman old town, massive castle hill, and completely different atmosphere compared to the coast. If you want to stay for dinner, I recommend Bar Restorant Gjirokaster Rrapi: a friendly owner, affordable prices, several small complimentary dishes, and a beautiful shaded garden with a fountain. Parking is also available.

Where to Stay in Sarandë – My Recommendation

Joanna Suites
For Sarandë, I recommend Joanna Suites – and there are several reasons why. The accommodation is modern, very clean, well maintained, and consistently well rated. On top of that, the sea view is a real highlight and makes the stay even more special. The price-performance ratio is excellent – considering what you get, the value is very fair for Sarandë.
Eating in Sarandë – My Favorite Food Spots
Sarandë has a surprisingly diverse food scene – from fresh seafood near the harbor, to excellent ice cream along the promenade, to relaxed beach restaurants outside the city. These are my personal favorites:

Fishbar Saranda – My Absolute Favorite
If I could recommend only one restaurant in Sarandë, it would be this one. We visited during our stay four times – which probably says everything. The linguine and seafood platter were our personal favorites, but the starters are also excellent: fresh salads, fried dishes, and different seafood options. The menu makes choosing difficult because everything sounds tempting. Add very fair prices and excellent quality, and this place is hard to beat.
Baci A Tutti – The Best Ice Cream Near the Promenade
If you walk along the Sarandë promenade in the evening, you should definitely stop at Baci A Tutti. The ice cream here is genuinely excellent, with unusual flavors you don’t find everywhere. The perfect companion for a relaxed evening walk by the sea.
Sunny Beach Borsh – Modern & Relaxed Right on the Beach
If you are spending a beach day in Borsh, Sunny Beach Borsh is a great choice. The atmosphere is modern and welcoming, and you immediately feel comfortable – perfect for having lunch after swimming or ending the day with a drink by the sea.
Bune Bay – The Perfect Stop Before Buneci Beach
Bune Bay is a brand-new restaurant located directly on the way to Buneci Beach and already makes a very well-kept impression. It’s ideal for a snack or a refreshing drink when combining your beach day with Buneci Beach.
Casa Mer Beach – After Sunset at Pulëbardha Beach
If you watched the sunset at Pulëbardha Beach and are still hungry afterwards, you don’t have to look far. Casa Mer Beach is located directly at the beach and is the perfect ending to such an evening. Simply stay, enjoy the sea view, and have a good meal.

Practical Tips for Sarandë 2026 – Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip
May, June, and September are ideal: warm enough for swimming, much quieter than peak summer, and noticeably cheaper.
For Sarandë itself, 2–3 days are enough. If you want to explore the beaches outside the city, the Blue Eye, and Gjirokastër, I recommend planning at least 4–5 days.
Many restaurants and accommodations accept cards. For markets, bakeries, and smaller local purchases, it is always useful to carry some Albanian Lek.
Absolutely. The most beautiful beaches and day-trip destinations are difficult to reach without your own vehicle. A normal car is completely sufficient for almost all routes.
Parking in the city itself is manageable during the day. At Lëkurësi Castle, make sure to arrive early enough – parking spaces are limited, especially around sunset.
Our conclusion: Sarandë exceeded my expectations – as a city, as a base for exploring the Riviera, and as a destination on its own. The beautiful promenade, the beaches nearby, the food at Fishbar Saranda, and the unforgettable sunset view from Lëkurësi Castle are exactly what make this place so special.
