Kruja is one of those places that’s easy to underestimate – until you visit it. Perched high on the mountainside, home to an impressive medieval fortress, one of Albania’s most beautiful bazaars, and a history that helped shape the nation, Kruja is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary. The best part? Its close proximity to Tirana International Airport makes Kruja the perfect first stop or grand finale for any Albania road trip.

How to Include Kruja in Your Albania Itinerary

Right After Landing

If you’re flying into Tirana and want to start exploring immediately, Kruja is an excellent choice. Tirana International Airport is only about 11 miles (18 km) away, making the drive approximately 30–40 minutes. Drop your luggage at the hotel and start your adventure – Kruja offers a fantastic first impression of Albania.

On Your Last Day – Just Like We Did

We visited Kruja on the final day of our Albania road trip while driving from Berat to the airport. Looking back, we couldn’t have made a better decision. Instead of spending our departure day waiting around, we squeezed every last bit out of our vacation by wandering through the bazaar, exploring the castle, and enjoying one final delicious Albanian meal before heading home.

• Driving time from Berat to Kruja: Approximately 1.5–2 hours via SH3 heading north.

Optional Stops Between Berat & Kruja

If you’d like to break up the drive, there are two worthwhile detours:

• Apollonia: The ancient archaeological site of Apollonia lies slightly west of the direct route but is well worth the short detour for history lovers. Remarkably well preserved, the ruins combine impressive ancient monuments with beautiful natural surroundings. Allow an additional 30–40 minutes for the detour.
• Durrës: Albania’s second-largest city sits directly along the route and is home to one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in the Balkans. If you have extra time, it’s a worthwhile stop before continuing to Kruja.

We personally skipped both stops – and honestly, we didn’t regret it. Kruja alone gave us more than enough to explore.

The Best Things to Do in Kruja

1. Pazari i Krujës – The Old Bazaar

Kruja’s Old Bazaar is one of the most beautiful and vibrant markets in Albania. The beautifully restored 19th-century market street winds through the historic center, lined with traditional wooden shops, artisan workshops, and small family-owned businesses. You’ll find handmade carpets, leather goods, souvenirs, antiques, and traditional Albanian crafts – all in an atmosphere that feels authentic rather than touristy. Whether you’re shopping or simply strolling through the cobblestone streets, the bazaar is an experience in itself.

2. Kalaja e Krujës – Kruja Castle

Kruja Castle is the city’s defining landmark and one of Albania’s most important historical sites. Often considered a national treasure, the fortress houses the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to Albania’s national hero who successfully defended Kruja against three Ottoman sieges during the 15th century. Beyond its fascinating history, the castle rewards visitors with spectacular views across the valley and surrounding mountains. Inside the fortress you’ll also find the Dollma Teqe, built in 1788, as well as the city’s Ethnographic Museum.

Where to Stay in Kruja – Hotel Kroi

Breakfast includes local specialties, Albanian cheeses, and a generous buffet that makes for an excellent start to the day. The value for money is outstanding.

Good to know: Hotel Kroi opened in 2023, so everything still feels fresh, modern, and exceptionally well maintained. Parking is available near the bazaar – just coordinate with the hotel before your arrival.

Where to Eat & Drink in Kruja

George W. Bush Bakery – The Perfect Way to Start the Day

Before arriving in Kruja, we stopped at the wonderfully named George W. Bush Bakery to pick up sandwiches and pastries for the day. The name alone is enough to make most visitors smile, but the fresh baked goods are the real reason to stop. It’s the perfect place to grab breakfast or snacks before sightseeing.

Bar Restaurant Horizont Krujë

Located on the road toward Mount Kruja at an elevation of more than 2,300 feet (700 m), this restaurant offers breathtaking panoramic views across the valley. The menu features traditional Albanian dishes including lamb specialties, cornbread with yogurt, the sweet local dessert Kabuni, homemade pomegranate juice, and house-made raki. If possible, visit around sunset – the views become even more spectacular.

Kodra e Bilbilave

Getting here requires some patience. Parts of the road are unpaved, and Google Maps doesn’t always make the route obvious. But once you arrive, you’ll understand why it’s worth the effort. This family-run restaurant enjoys a stunning location overlooking the mountains around Kruja and Fushë-Krujë. The food is fresh, prices are very reasonable, and it’s one of the most beautiful places in the area to enjoy dinner while watching the sunset.

Practical Tips for Visiting Kruja – Including My Google My Map

• Getting There & Parking: If you’re driving, head directly to Parking Kalaja. You can either park there or along the nearby roadside, where parking is free. From there, it’s only a short walk to both the Old Bazaar and Kruja Castle. A standard rental car is perfectly suitable for all roads.
• How Much Time Should You Plan? To fully enjoy Kruja – including the bazaar, castle, and lunch – you should allow 3–4 hours. If you’re visiting before a flight, that’s still plenty of time without feeling rushed.
• Cash: Like almost everywhere else in Albania, it’s a good idea to carry some Albanian Lek. Many small restaurants and market vendors still prefer cash.

Our conclusion: Kruja was the perfect ending to our trip to Albania. The lively bazaar, historic castle, and incredible mountain views provided one last unforgettable experience before we headed to the airport.
