1. Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) – Albania’s Most Famous Natural Wonder

The Blue Eye is one of Albania’s most mesmerizing natural attractions. This deep-blue karst spring pumps more than 4,750 gallons (18,000 liters) of crystal-clear water every second while maintaining a year-round temperature of around 50°F (10°C). Viewed from above, the spring truly resembles a giant eye – an intense sapphire-blue center surrounded by brilliant turquoise rings.

From the parking area, a shaded 1.2-mile (2-km) forest trail leads to the spring, making for a peaceful walk through lush greenery that feels worlds away from the sunny beaches along the coast.

2. Butrint – A UNESCO World Heritage Site by the Water

Starting Point: Sarandë | Drive Time: About 30 minutes

Walking through Butrint feels like traveling across 2,500 years of history. Explore an ancient Greek sanctuary, a Roman theater, an early Christian baptistery with spectacular mosaics, a Byzantine basilica, a Venetian tower, and an Ottoman fortress – all nestled on a wooded peninsula overlooking a peaceful lagoon. The combination of archaeology, nature, and waterfront scenery makes Butrint one of Albania’s most unforgettable attractions.

3. Përmet & Benja Hot Springs – Natural Thermal Pools in the Mountains

Starting Point: Sarandë (about 2.5 hours) | Gjirokastër (about 1.5 hours)

The Benja Hot Springs sit at the entrance to the spectacular Langarica Canyon beneath the arches of a beautifully preserved 18th-century Ottoman stone bridge. Rich in minerals and naturally heated to 79–90°F (26–32°C), these pools are surrounded by mountains, a flowing river, and dramatic canyon walls. There are six thermal pools in total – two near the bridge and four farther inside the canyon that require a short hike.

Good to Know:

• Free admission – no tickets or reservations required
• Parking costs about 200 LEK
• Bring water shoes and a towel – there are no changing rooms
• Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon for fewer crowds
• Easy to combine with a hike through Langarica Canyon

4. Osumi Canyon – Albania’s Grand Canyon

Starting Point: Berat | Drive Time: About 1.5 hours

Often called the Grand Canyon of Albania, Osumi Canyon is one of the country’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Over thousands of years, the Osum River carved a dramatic 16-mile (26-km) canyon reaching depths of nearly 500 feet (150 m). Waterfalls, caves, towering cliffs, and narrow passages create an unforgettable adventure. Depending on the season, the canyon offers two completely different experiences. From March through June, high water levels make it one of Albania’s top rafting destinations. From July through September, water levels drop, allowing visitors to hike, swim, and explore sections of the canyon on foot.

• The access road is fully paved and suitable for any rental car
• Parking, viewpoints, and a small snack stand are available

5. Kruja – Castle, Bazaar & Albania’s National History

Starting Point: Tirana or Tirana International Airport | Drive Time: About 30–40 minutes

Kruja is the perfect first or last stop on an Albania itinerary. Perched high on a mountainside, the city is dominated by its historic fortress, where Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg successfully resisted three Ottoman sieges during the 15th century. Below the castle lies one of Albania’s most charming bazaars, filled with artisan workshops, carpet sellers, and traditional craft shops.

• Only 11 miles (18 km) from Tirana International Airport
• Allow at least 3–4 hours for the castle and bazaar
• Park near the bazaar and continue on foot

6. Apollonia – Ancient Greek Ruins Off the Beaten Path

Starting Point: Fier or Berat | Drive Time: About 45 minutes

Apollonia is one of Albania’s most significant archaeological sites – and one of its least crowded. Founded by Greek colonists during the 6th century BC, it later became an important Roman city. Today you’ll wander among remarkably well-preserved ruins, including a theater, temples, monasteries, and an archaeological museum surrounded by peaceful countryside.

• Allow several hours to explore

7. Lake Koman – One of Europe’s Most Scenic Ferry Rides

Starting Point: Shkodër | Drive Time to Koman: About 2 hours

Lake Koman offers one of Europe’s most breathtaking boat journeys. The 2.5-hour ferry ride winds through narrow mountain gorges lined with towering cliffs, dense forests, and brilliantly turquoise water. Originally built as a transportation route for local communities, the ferry has become one of Albania’s most spectacular travel experiences.

For a day trip, the round-trip boat ride to the Shala River is especially popular, offering complete immersion in untouched nature.

Shkodër is considered the cultural capital of northern Albania and one of the country’s oldest cities. Its most famous landmark is Rozafa Castle, dramatically perched on a hill overlooking Lake Shkodër, the Drin River, and the surrounding mountains. After exploring the fortress, spend time wandering the charming Old Town with its cafés, markets, and pedestrian streets.

• Rent a Car: For most destinations, renting a car is by far the easiest and most flexible option. Organized tours are also available for places like Lake Koman and Apollonia.
• Bring Cash: Most attractions accept cash only, so always carry enough Albanian Lek.
• Best Time to Visit: May, June, and September offer the ideal balance of warm weather, smaller crowds, and lower prices than peak summer.
• Plan a Full Day: Every destination deserves a full day. Starting early gives you the best experience and helps you avoid crowds.
