South Africa is made for road trips. Few countries offer such a diverse mix of safaris, vibrant cities, dramatic coastlines and world-class national parks within relatively short distances. In this guide, we share our tried-and-tested 3-week South Africa road trip itinerary, which took us from Johannesburg to Cape Town, along the iconic Garden Route, to Addo Elephant National Park – and back to Johannesburg. In this article, you’ll find:
Who This 3-Week South Africa Itinerary Is Perfect For
This itinerary combines South Africa’s most iconic highlights while still allowing enough time to slow down and truly experience each destination. It’s a great fit if you:
Want to experience safari without malaria risk
Love nature and hiking (e.g. Garden Route, Robberg Nature Reserve, coastal trails)
Enjoy road trips and don’t mind longer driving days
Prefer planning independently rather than joining guided tours
This route is less suitable if you strongly prefer short driving distances. Some sections – especially between the coast and Johannesburg – are long, but incredibly scenic and rewarding.
Highlights of the Route:
Safaris in Pilanesberg National Park & Addo Elephant National Park
The cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg
Hermanus & De Hoop Nature Reserve
The Garden Route with Wilderness, Knysna & Plettenberg Bay
Important Planning Tips for a South Africa Road Trip
A self-drive trip through South Africa is far easier than many travelers expect. Still, a few key considerations will help ensure a relaxed and realistic itinerary:
Plan Driving Times Realistically: Even though roads are generally well maintained, distances shouldn’t be planned based on kilometers alone. Driving inside national parks takes much longer due to speed limits and frequent wildlife sightings. For very long stretches – such as Johannesburg → Cape Town or Addo Elephant National Park → Johannesburg – we strongly recommend adding overnight stops to break up the journey.
Combine Road Trip & Domestic Flights: To reduce long driving days, this itinerary can be perfectly combined with domestic flights, for example:
International flight into Johannesburg
Domestic flight to Cape Town
Road trip along the Garden Route
Drive or fly back to Johannesburg
We highly recommend including both cities: Johannesburg is an excellent safari base (e.g. Pilanesberg), while Cape Town stands out culturally, scenically and gastronomically.
Stay Flexible: Weather conditions, wildlife sightings or spontaneous recommendations may make you want to stay longer in certain places. Build in buffer time – especially in destinations like Cape Town, Plettenberg Bay or inside national parks.
Choosing the Right Vehicle: A standard 2WD rental car is completely sufficient for this route. An SUV offers more comfort on gravel roads but isn’t essential. More important is a reliable vehicle with enough storage space.
Driving Style & Road Conditions: Highways, national parks and nature reserves are generally in good condition. Some gravel roads are unavoidable but usually well maintained. Drive cautiously, adjust your speed and always stay alert. Remember that South Africa drives on the left – it takes a day or two to adjust, but quickly becomes second nature.
